Satisfy Your Palate With A Glass Of Helm Wines

If the world is coming to an end and I had to pick one alcoholic beverage for my last hurrah, I will pick wine over anything!

My fondness of wines continues to endure not only because of its delightful taste but also because of its health benefits. In moderation, drinking wine reduces the risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases. The fruit of the vine is said to increase the levels of HDL (“good” cholesterol) and to prevent the levels of LDL (“bad” cholesterol). The next time that your partner catches you with a glass filled with wine, say it is for a healthier heart!

All In The Family

Reward your palate with a benefiting and tantalizing experience at one of the leading wineries in Canberra District – the Helm Wines. It is among the first commercial wineries in Canberra District Wine Region as it was established way back in 1973!

What were you doing in the hippie ’70s? Were you rocking your new aviator sunglasses or were you grooving with the disco music?

For Ken and Judith Helm, this was the period when they started their own vineyard. Their passion for wines has been running through their veins because they are the 4th and 5th generation descendants of German vinedressers. The winery continues to become a family ordeal as each family member plays an important part in the business. Ken along with his daughter Stephanie are artisans of Helm Wines.

Crafting Award-winning Wines

Winemaking, according to the philosophy of Helm Wines, is an art and not a science. The grape acts as a medium to create a masterpiece! The highly raved about “medium” is the Riesling.

Riesling is a variety of white grapes, which originated from Germany. Ken’s longstanding relationship with Riesling spans for over 30 years. It was the first wine that he produced in Canberra (1977). Furthermore, it was the reason why the winery got its first award. This is why Ken refers to Riesling as the “Queen of Grapes”. To capture the absolute freshness of the Queen, the staff starts by harvesting the fruit by hand and fermenting it carefully. Bottling is carried out as soon as possible.

The winery generally uses a fusion of contemporary and traditional equipment. They strive to “produce premium quality wines that reflect the true characteristics of the grapes and the land in which they have been grown”.

In The Recent Years

Nowadays, Helm Wines is known for making world-class Rieslings and Cabernet Sauvignons. Ken’s pioneer contributions to Canberra and Australian Wine Industries have been recognized thru the NSW Government Graham Gregory Medal, Member of the Order of Australia, and several other awards or reviews of their wines.

In 2012, the winery was given a five-star rating in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. Pretty impressive, right?
