Increased Visa Application Fee Slated for July 2015

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) has announced an increase in visa application charges (VACs), which would take effect on July 1, 2015. Funds collected from the increased VACs will be utilised to support improvements in borders and national security. VACs that will be significantly affected by the increase include that of Significant Investor visas and offshore Partner visas, which are lined up for a 50% price increase.

Key Facts on the VAC Increase

  1. Visas which face strong international competition and those which have been affected by recent price increases will see a 2.3% increase in VAC prices. These include visas within the following streams:
  • Permanent Migration Skill
  • Skilled Graduate
  • Student Visa
  • Temporary Long Stay Business (subclass 457)
  • Visitor Visa
  2. Meanwhile, VACs for visas with strong demand, as well as those which are perceived to sustain volume increase with policy changes, will face a 5% increase. These include the following visas:
  • Contributory Parent Visa Streams
  • Entertainment Visas
  • Resident Return Visas
  • Retirement Investor Visas
  • Temporary Resident Short Term Business Visas
  • Working Holiday Visas
  3. On the other hand, a 10% increase will be slated for visas wherein the underlying demand will not be affected by the price increase. These include the following:
  • Other Family (Remaining Relative, Carer and Aged Dependent Relative) Visas
  • Non-Contributory Parent Visa Streams
  4. A whopping 50% VAC increase will be observed for the following visa:
  • Significant Investor Visa
  5. VAC for visas with different onshore and offshore application fees will be aligned. This will result to roughly 50% VAC increase for the following visas:
  • Offshore Partner Visas
  • Distinguished Talent Offshore Visa
  • Parent Migrant Visa
  • Aged Dependent Relative Visa
  • Remaining Relative Visa
  6. Electronic Travel Authorities (ETA), Refugee and Humanitarian and eVisitor visas will not be impacted by the VAC changes.   The following table shows the current and new VACs for various Australian visas. Please note that the table only refers to VACs for primary applicants. Visa applications for child and adult dependents will be charged differently.
