I think everyone will agree if I’ll say that Filipino parents are very unique when it comes to raising their own child.
And I don’t know what’s the deal with our parents but why do they say the same things to their children? Out of thousands of Filipino parents in the Philippines (and all over the world), they all agreed to say the same ridiculous things just to scare their kids.
You know what I’m saying, right? And you’ll probably laugh when you read these lines and remember how your parents said these with full emotions.
“Kapag hindi ka natulog sa hapon, kukuhain ka ng bumbay!”
Before the internet, kids are required to sleep every noon before playing outside. And if you refuse to sleep, well, they got a solution for that.
“Ayan, kutsilyo. Magsaksakan kayo!”
Your parents heard you and your siblings fighting and instead of stopping your fight, Filipino parents will give you a knife. Yes, a knife and they will shout, “Sige! Magsaksakan kayo!” (Go! Kill each other).
And this will make you guys stop and stare at each other like, “okay, I think we need to stop”.
“Kakakompyuter mo ‘yan!”
Headache, backache, cough, flu, you’re sick because you played computer games all day. Yes, that’s the reason… I guess?
“Guard! Sige, papakuha kita sa Guard! Guard!”
Parents usually do these at malls when kids are acting up. They will, of course, never hand you over to the guard or the police. It’s just plain crazy talk but it works wonders for kids.
“Sige, umiyak ka! May lalabas na pari/kanin d’yan”
I don’t know what our parents are thinking but they really know how to scare kids. Imagine, rice and a priest will come out in your wound? Every kid will cry louder as hell if their parents say this.
“Kapag ayan ‘di mo nakita, makikita mo talaga!”
When a Filipino parent says this, it means that you should look harder to find what you’re looking for.
If not, then get yourself ready to face the end of the world!
“Bakit hindi ka sumasagot?” and “Sumasagot ka na ha?!”
This is a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” type of situation. If you answer back, you get hit with “Aba, sumasagot ka na ha?!”. On the other hand, if you just keep quiet, they’ll say “Ano, bakit hindi ka sumasagot?!”
But let’s admit it, we won’t be as disciplined like we are today without our loving parents. Yes, they only do crazy stuff just to keep us on track and mold us into a responsible adult.
And even though they often scare us with their insane dialogue, we surely have missed those good old days.
