Australia is known for being one of the most interesting countries. From their history, strange town names, and incredible hiking spots, Australia has always something extraordinary to offer. And what’s more interesting is their accent and slang terms that only a true Aussie can know.
Aussie English can be quite hard to understand on your own, so if you’re planning to visit or move to Australia, here are the few of the many slang terms and phrases that you should know:
Aussies are known to abbreviate almost everything. So Macca’s is the short term for McDonald’s because, well, McDonald’s is too long to say. Right?
She’ll be right
There’s no female who’s involved here, it only means that “Everything will be all right or no worries”.
There’s no actual blood on an oath because this phrase only means “That’s certainly true!”
Carry on like a Pork Chop
Is it food or should you act like food? Nope. It means, “To act in an overly dramatic manner” how? I don’t actually know.
Any idea what this word means? If you’re thinking about avocado then you’re on the wrong path. Arvo means “Afternoon” in Aussies.
This one is easy, imagine someone laughing too hard then a liquid comes? Yup, liquid laugh means “vomit”.
Chuck a U-Ey
Is this the should of a rooster every morning? Or a name of a grocery store? No! It means, “To make a U-turn while driving”.
Flat Out like a Lizard Drinking
Any idea what this phrase means? ‘Coz I can’t imagine any lizard drinking something? Simple, “To be very busy”.
Nope, it’s not Ken’s Barbie. Come on, that a guess… barbie? barb? barbiii?? barbeque! Yes! it’s “Barbeque”, all right!
Accadacca is how Aussies refer to Australian band “ACDC”. ACDC is a rock band formed in Sydney in 1973.
Now this one is too easy. We all know what’s the famous Facey of all time. Yup, it means, “Facebook”.
